Egon Schiele in the bedroom of Jessica Jones

Art is all around. If you look closely, you can see it in the most surprising places. I especially enjoy searching for art objects in movies and TV series. I make it a habit of scanning a scene to see if I can find a hidden masterpiece.

Imagine my joy when I spotted the image below in the Netflix TV Series Jessica Jones (2015-). I already loved Jessica, the swearing, tough cookie private investigator with super powers. But when I saw what fine taste in art she has, it made me love her a little bit more.

In the last episode of season one, AKA Smile, Jessica enters her bedroom. On the wall, you can clearly see an image of a woman. This is unmistakably a work by Austrian artist Egon Schiele (1890-1918).

Still from Jessica Jones, S1e13 AKA Smile. On the wall you can see a reproduction of: Egon Schiele, Seated Woman with Bent Knee, 1917.

Egon Schiele to me is one of the most remarkable painters of the 20th century. His work is so intense, expressing so many emotions. It really speaks to me.

Schiele was born in Austria in 1890. He studied at the art academy of Vienna from 1906 to 1909. During these years he met Gustav Klimt, which was at that time the most famous and successful artist in Austria. Klimt loved the work of the young Schiele and took him under his wings.

Schiele caused quite a stir back in those days. One particular exhibition of his works even ended in a three days incarceration due to the ‘spreading of pornographical drawings’. Even though he has made numerous paintings, it’s drawings like the one on Jessica’s wall that have become representational for his work.

Big thumbs up for the makers of the series for having taken a close look at the original comic book, in which the Schiele drawing is already incorporated. (Thank you, @io9). It’s a perfect match with the strength and sexuality of this female character.

Want to join in on this game of artspotting? Suggestions are always welcome. Please do let me know if you spot something. It can be an  extraordinary building, book, play, basically everything that is art related and is used as a background or set dressing in a movie or TV Series.

Have fun exploring!

    her shower curtain is Klimt

    • That is awesome. Well done, Jessica :-). Thanks for sharing!

I will try to find a pic of it. Do you know if it is the curtain in the comic or in the TV Series?

Brilliant! I noticed it right away, it’s an unmistakable Schiele. I’m unfortunately not overly familiar with the comic book, but love the show. I love it even more now actually! I agree, it’s well suited with Jessica’s rebellious, yet sexual character. Well done on the post!

    • Thanks for this nice reaction, Olie! I assumed the Schiele was an addition of the art department guys and thought that was really clever of them. Than I did some research, and the painting turned out to already have been in the comic! Happy that the makers of the series noticed that and used the painting in the show.
      Happy Christmas.

Anyone know what the painting is in the motel room or wherever she is when Jessica’s mother sees the news about patsys whereabouts? Episode 12 season two?

    • Hi Tommy,

Yes, I know what it is. It is a work by Peter Paul Rubens, and is called The Feast of Acheloüs. You can admire it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Maybe I will do a post on it soon. Thanks for catching this artwork!

Update: I have done a post on it. You can read about it by clicking here.

Any luck finding who painted those fantastic abstract pieces in Jeri Hogarth’s office?

    • Hi Helen,

Am working on it! I am doing some research and am awaiting response of the people that worked on the set of Jessica Jones. As soon as they get back to me, I will make sure to post the details. Thanks for following :-).

Artwork in room Jessica is held in episode 8? One table lamp, one hanging lamp, one huge shell on top of a wardrobe, the pictures of a sunflower, a cartoonish face, a large red flower( a la Georgia O’Keefe) and one that looks like swatches of color. Maybe they are just cheap stuff, but I doubt all of it is! Some of us watch the drama, some of us watch the sets Hope you find out some good stuff.
