Art is all around. If you look closely, you can see it in the most surprising places. I especially enjoy searching for art objects in movies and TV series. I make it a habit of scanning a scene to see if I can find a hidden masterpiece.
Imagine my joy when I spotted the image below in the Netflix TV Series Jessica Jones (2015-). I already loved Jessica, the swearing, tough cookie private investigator with super powers. But when I saw what fine taste in art she has, it made me love her a little bit more.
In the last episode of season one, AKA Smile, Jessica enters her bedroom. On the wall, you can clearly see an image of a woman. This is unmistakably a work by Austrian artist Egon Schiele (1890-1918).
Egon Schiele to me is one of the most remarkable painters of the 20th century. His work is so intense, expressing so many emotions. It really speaks to me.
Schiele was born in Austria in 1890. He studied at the art academy of Vienna from 1906 to 1909. During these years he met Gustav Klimt, which was at that time the most famous and successful artist in Austria. Klimt loved the work of the young Schiele and took him under his wings.
Schiele caused quite a stir back in those days. One particular exhibition of his works even ended in a three days incarceration due to the ‘spreading of pornographical drawings’. Even though he has made numerous paintings, it’s drawings like the one on Jessica’s wall that have become representational for his work.
Big thumbs up for the makers of the series for having taken a close look at the original comic book, in which the Schiele drawing is already incorporated. (Thank you, @io9). It’s a perfect match with the strength and sexuality of this female character.
Want to join in on this game of artspotting? Suggestions are always welcome. Please do let me know if you spot something. It can be an extraordinary building, book, play, basically everything that is art related and is used as a background or set dressing in a movie or TV Series.
Have fun exploring!
